Might and Magic Coming to Web3
Winter's Weekly - Week of 21 April 2025
Immutable Partnership Brings Major IP
Immutable made a huge announcement this week that Might and Magic Fates will be launching on their ecosystem. This is part of the partnership they entered into with Ubisoft two years ago.
Might and Magic Fates is an official part of the Might and Magic universe franchise, a major gaming IP that have been around for more than 40 years. The game will be an original strategy trading card game that is free to play and will launch on iOS and Android, with PC to be confirmed. The game is expected to launch later this year.
The web3 layer for the game will unlock digital ownership for players and is completely optional. It offers no competitive advantage and players can still enjoy the full experience of the game and remain competitive without interacting with any blockchain elements.
Opinion and sentiment in the space was divided upon the announcement.
Some, like Rubick, were excited that a gaming powerhouse like Ubisoft is willing to take such a massive IP into the web3 gaming space. They described this collaboration has a huge moment that is years in the making, and that this has the potential to tap into Ubisoft’s large user base of over 138 million Ubisoft Connect users.
Others, like Jonny, were skeptical stating that Ubisoft is not the gaming studio it once was. They have already failed in their previous web3 gaming ventures and that doesn’t inspire any confidence to believe that this would turn out any different. Needless to say, traditional gamers on Reddit balked at the news of blockchain integration and expressed disappointment with Ubisoft’s handling of the IP.
Some remained neutral, expressed cautious optimism, and wanted to take a wait-and-see approach. Daniel Droege wrote a deep dive into the history of the Might and Magic franchise, and cautioned that Ubisoft needs to prioritize gameplay depth over monetization for this to succeed.
Personally, I’m a fan of the Might and Magic franchise, having spent countless hours playing Heroes of Might and Magic in my younger days, and would have preferred to see the next installment of the turn-based strategy game being made into a web3 game.
Nevertheless, I do acknowledge that such a major IP coming into web3 will bring eyeballs and attention into our space, potentially being able to expose and convert non-web3 native gamers.
Whether the game succeeds or not, we will have to find out in due course because a lot of the details of the gameplay have not been released yet and to render judgement now would be premature.
