Remembering What It Took To Get Here
The GAM3 Awards 2024 Adventure Game of the Year winner, RavenQuest, have just launched to live production a few hours ago at this time of this writing. Thousands of players have been waiting in anticipation for months and it has been a busy period leading up to it with player name reservations and land claiming happening throughout the week.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, let’s take a little walk down memory lane to understand the effort it took to come to this point.
Early Beginnings
Canada-based studio Tavernlight Games, previously known as Living Phoenix Entertainment before rebranding in 2022, was founded in 2015 and began development of the open world sandbox MMORPG, Ravendawn, in 2016. The founder, Knighter, recounted his motivation for doing so as wanting to create a game that he would want to play.
The early days were tough as the team was lean and Knighter was still holding a full-time job in the finance industry to fund the development of the game. Still, the team continued to push through.
The Launch of Ravendawn
After years of development and a 2-year testing period, Ravendawn was launched on 16 January 2024 and achieved success with more than 200,000 monthly active users (MAU).
The team never rested on their laurels and continued improving and adding new content to the game. Their first major expansion, Horizon’s Call, was released on 9 August 2024, which included new systems like the Adventurer’s Board, Aether Rfits, and Aether Echoes.
Just last month in February 2025, the team released the 2025 roadmap for Ravendawn, which detailed more updates and another major expansion coming later this year.
The Coming of RavenQuest
In January 2022, the studio announced they would be developing a blockchain-enabled fork of Ravendawn, called Ravendawn Eternal. This would be a separate game from Ravendawn to give the option for players to choose whether they wanted blockchain elements in their game. Ravendawn Eternal would eventually be renamed as RavenQuest.
To announce their foray into the world of web3 gaming, RavenQuest launched their Early Access Phase 1 on 29 August 2024 with a 10 million QUEST airdrop campaign. This was very well-received in the web3 gaming space due to the sheer amount of content and the level of polish the game had, which was never seen before in the space.
This was followed by Early Access Phase 2, which started on 21 September 2024, and drew more than 74,000 players. And then Early Access Phase 3, which started on 5 December 2024, and had the largest airdrop of 11 million QUEST tokens.
Throughout the period, the Tavernlight team stuck to their ethos of “deliver first, ask second”, and only conducted their land sales after they have shipped updates and improvements to the game. Needless to say, the RavenQuest community appreciated this gesture from the team and the different land sale phases were quickly sold out. All 4,000 plots of land in RavenQuest are now fully sold out, with the team holding 333 plots of land which is reserved as rewards and will never be sold.
The Global Release of RavenQuest
The global release date for RavenQuest was announced during their first live tournament which was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 1 February 2025. Over 100 creators and 40 team members attended the live event and witnessed the reveal of the global release date - 14 March 2025.
The weeks leading up to global release was filled with events and announcements.
The post-release roadmaps were announced, detailing the plans the team have in place for months of continuous weekly updates. The final land sale was conducted, and players were involved in getting their names reserved, and lands claimed in preparation for the launch.
Which brings us all the way back to the present.
RavenQuest have now launched and thousands of players have filled the servers, exploring the world, making their mark, and establishing their legacies. It took years of development effort and sacrifices for the team to being us to where we are now, and for that, we owe a big thank you to the team.
I hope you enjoyed this look back into their history as much as I enjoyed writing it. Now, time to jump back into the world of RavenQuest.
See you in-game!
